Human Rights Council

The Australian Mission to the United Nations in Geneva represents Australia's interests in the Human Rights Council. The Council was created in March 2006 to replace the former Commission on Human Rights as the United Nations' pre-eminent human rights body.

Australia's Universal Periodic Review

The Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a unique process which involves a review of the human rights records of all 192 UN Member States once every four years. 

Australia will be reviewed during the tenth UPR session in early February 2011.

The Attorney-General's Department will coordinate the Australian Government's National Report ahead of Australia's appearance.   More information, including on how to get involved, is available online from the Attorney-General's Department.

Australia's report under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD)

Australia lodged its combined 15th, 16th and 17th reports under the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination (CERD convention) with the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in December 2009. The report covers Australia's compliance with its obligations under the CERD Convention for the period from 1 July 2002 to 30 June 2008.

Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly

The Human Rights Grants Scheme provides small grants to in-country organisations (primarily non-government) for activities aimed at promoting and protecting human rights in a direct and tangible way.
