How to apply for jobs

The Department advertises all recruitment processes on the vacancies page as well as on the APSjobs website. Vacancies may also occasionally be advertised in the press. DFAT jobs are open to all Australian citizens.

It is possible to receive e-mailed notification of the Department's vacancies by selecting 'Department of Foreign Affairs' in the 'Email Me Jobs' link on the APSjobs website.

All applications must be submitted on-line in response to a listed advertisement. The Department's 'Jobs' page contains all the information required to complete a job application including selection criteria, duty statements and application guidelines.

All queries relating to job applications should be directed to the Department's human resources service provider, Candle ICT via email at dfat@candlerecruit.com, or by phone on (02) 6260 7533.

The Department's selection processes are governed by the requirements of the Public Service Act 1999. Candidates are judged individually against the relevant selection criteria as well as comparatively against other candidates for the position. The selection committee (usually three members) will determine applicants' comparative merit for the position based on their application, performance at interview and comments from referees.
